As in so many other countires, football is very popular amongst Czechs. The country has taken part in many international competitions, for example the World Cups and the European Championships. Famous Czech players include Pavel Nedved, Petr Čech and Tomáš Rosický.
Another popular sport is ice hockey, in which the Czechs have succeeded widely. They have won the World Championships six times. Jaromir Jagr, the world- renowned hockey player who plays for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, comes from the country in question.
One of the greatest long-distance runners in history, the Czech Emil Zátopek, won multiple medals and set many records during his career. Kristiina Mäki, the half Finnish and half Czech runner, has decided to represent the Czech Republic in international games.
Kateřina Neumannová |
Czechs have also excelled at cross country-skiing. For example, skier Kateřina Neumannová has won six Olympic medals. Because of the country's mountainous terrain, the Czech Republic has many optimal downhill skiing possibilities. Skiers of all skill levels will find a slope that suits them. And when downhill skiing does not excite you anymore, you can always go ski jumping! Harrachov, a world-famous ski jump location, is perfect for this activity.
